\n 3rd<\/sup> Person<\/strong>\n <\/td>\n He did\n <\/td>\n  \n <\/td><\/tr>
\n  \n <\/td>\n She did\n <\/td>\n They did\n <\/td><\/tr>
\n  \n <\/td>\n It did\n <\/td>\n  \n <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n

Uses of The Simple Past Tense:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The past\ntense refers to actions completed in the past at a definite time:<\/strong>
    1. Actions with the specific time given:<\/strong> We met them to\ndiscuss this proposal yesterday.    His\nfather passed away in 2016. I was born in 1990.<\/em><\/li><\/ol>
      1. When actions took place even though time is not\nmentioned:<\/strong> The bus arrived 10 minutes late.   \nHow did you convince him to work with you?    I bought a Volvo S90 car in Canada.<\/em><\/li><\/ol><\/li>
      2. The past tense is used for a past habit:<\/strong> She always\ncarried a water bottle.    My father\ndrank the cold milk. <\/em>
        1. We can also use \u2018used to\u2019 or \u2018would\u2019 for past habitual\nactions:<\/strong> My father used to drink cold milk. My father would drink cold milk. <\/em><\/li><\/ol><\/li>
        2. The past tense is also used in conditional sentences\nwhen the supposition is contrary to known facts: <\/strong>If I were\nyou, I would not have done such a mistake (But I am not you.) <\/em><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Note: The same sentence can also be constructed in other\nway as well: Were I you, I would not have\ndone such a mistake (But I am not you.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          If I knew\nthis fact beforehand, I would not have permitted him to go and talk to him.\n(But I don\u2019t know this fact.) <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          For the unreal past, we use subjunctive mood with as\nthough, as if, it is time, if only, would sooner\/rather and wish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          She is\ncrying as if she were a child. (But she is not a child)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • The past tense is used for describing\nincidents\/accidents: <\/strong>The plane was hijacked by terrorists.    Two pilots were killed in a helicopter\ncrash.<\/em><\/li>
          • The past tense is used for narrating stories and\nhistory:<\/strong> Maharaja Ranjit Singh was a brave king.    There was a clever crow.    The 1897 battle of Saragarhi was the\nepitome of bravery, sacrifice and valor.   \nBaji Rao never lost a battle in his life.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
