  1. I belong to\nAhmedabad.<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    This expression reminds me of the past era. It is a\nkind of allegiance to any ruler. It looks as if you show your allegiance to a city.\nYes, when somebody asks you where you are from. Better say the following way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I come from Ahmedabad or I am from Ahmedabad.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • She is doing\nher graduation in Cincinnati.<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      The moment I hear the word \u2018graduation\u2019, it reminds me\nof my graduation ceremony day, dressing up in a gown and cap to receive the\ndegree certificate after studying a three-year undergraduate degree. But it is\nnot the case in India. \u2018Doing graduation\u2019 refers to the full undergraduate or\ngraduate degree. It does not say about the one special day for which students\nwait anxiously in life. \u2018I did my graduation at the University of\nToronto\u2019 is the equivalent of saying \u2018I studied for my degree at the University\nof Toronto\u2019 \u2013 in the context of India.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • I passed\nout of college last year.<\/em><\/strong> <\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        As per the Oxford dictionary, the phrasal verb \u2018to pass out\u2019 means \u2018to become unconscious\u2019<\/strong>.\nTherefore, if I put this statement into a literal translation, it comes out\nlike \u2018I became unconscious at the college last year\u2019. Do we mean this? I guess\nnot. It should be, \u201cI graduated last year\u201d<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • My sister\nis convent-educated.<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          So, the meaning of convent-educated in the context of\nIndia is somebody who has studied in a school where the medium of instruction\nwas English. Parents proudly mention this expression on matrimonial ads\/websites.\nThere was a time when teaching in India was generally delivered by members of\nthe clergy, but it is not the case anymore. The choice is yours whether you\nwant to use this expression or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Please do\nthe needful.<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            The \u2018Grammarly Blog\u2019 describes this expression in a\ncogent way. The writer or speaker here wants to say is \u2018do that which is\nneeded\u2019 or \u2018do what needs to be done\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cIf it sounds too chunky or vague to you, or if your\naudience will be unfamiliar with it, you can politely ask people to do what you\nneed them to do instead\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            • My father is\nout of station.<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              I don\u2019t really understand the rationale behind this statement. There could be many stations in the town, such as the railway station, bus station, and other types of stations. Which station is referred to here? It can simply be said like this: My father is away or My father is not present in the place.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              • I preponed\nmy tour.<\/em><\/strong> <\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                There is no word such as prepone<\/em><\/strong> in the English\nlanguage, but it has certainly been invented by Indians. Yes, it has been added\nto the dictionary because it has widely been used in India. Let\u2019s put this word\nin the context: I am out of my station next week so I will prepone this job\ntomorrow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                The right way of speaking: I will do this job tomorrow as I\nam away next week. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                • He is a\nfour-twenty. <\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                  420 is an Indian Penal Code (IPC) which states\ncheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property. In a way, it attributes\nto the IPC for a cheat. Why complicate? Make it simple by saying: He is\na thug.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  • My neighbor\nis foreign-returned. <\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                    All right, so this expression also stems from the\nfamily of convent-educated. People in India perceive valuable studying or\nliving abroad and when somebody returns to India after living another country,\nthey are called as foreign-returned. However, there is no such expression\nanywhere in the world but in India. It is an asset in the matrimonial adverts,\ntoo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    1. My teacher is standing\/sitting on my head. <\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                      It is a colloquial way of comparing. If your teacher\nis standing or sitting on your head, tell him to get down and make a complaint\nto the principal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      My teacher is stressing me out. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      1. He was doing this thing and that thing. <\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                        It is another colloquial way of comparing. He\nwas doing all sorts of things, wasting my time.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                        1. Do one thing<\/em><\/strong>.<\/strong> <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                          It is a common expression while suggesting or ordering\nsomeone to do something, but it also brings some laughing. The right way of\nspeaking is \u2018There is one thing you could do\u2019.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                          1. Aakash is my cousin brother: <\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                            We never use a brother or a sister after the noun \u2018cousin\u2019.\nThe word \u2018cousin\u2019 itself proves a relationship. Aakash is my cousin.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                            1. According to me\u2026 <\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                              According to someone or anyone is all acceptable but\nnot according to me. Grammatically some sentence structures cannot be\nchallenged, but their finesse and usage will certainly be questionable.\n\u2018According to me\u2019 is one among them. There is no such expression. The right one\nis: To\nme or In my opinion or My viewpoint is\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
