\n 2nd<\/sup> Person<\/strong>\n <\/td>\n You are eating = You\u2019re\n eating\n <\/td>\n You are eating = You\u2019re\n eating\n <\/td><\/tr>
\n 3rd<\/sup> Person<\/strong>\n <\/td>\n He is eating = He\u2019s eating\n <\/td>\n  \n <\/td><\/tr>
\n  \n <\/td>\n She is eating = She\u2019s\n eating\n <\/td>\n They are eating = They\u2019re\n eating\n <\/td><\/tr>

Uses of The Present Progressive (Continuous) Tense:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. For an action happening at the time of speaking:<\/strong> She is weeping.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 I am wearing a scarf as it will look good.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Why are you complaining me for the act which I did not do? <\/em><\/li>
  2. For an action happening now, but not necessarily at the time of speaking:<\/strong> I am reading a novel in which the girl marries her bodyguard. <\/em>(I may not be reading at the moment of speaking, but it means \u2018now\u2019 in a more general sense.)\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0My sister is learning French and teaching English.<\/em> (She may not be doing either at the time of speaking)<\/li>
  3. For a definite arrangement taking place in the near future (it refers to the immediate plans):<\/strong> Our company is opening up a new branch in Toronto next month.<\/em>\u00a0 My friends are coming tonight, and I am taking them to the theatre. <\/em><\/li>
  4. With always, especially for obstinate habits \u2013<\/strong> something which persists and annoys: <\/strong>My dog, Jericho is very silly; he is always jumping on the kitchen platform for human food.\u00a0\u00a0 I know you very well. You are always losing your keys.<\/em> <\/li>
  5. Certain involuntary actions are not usually used in the continuous tenses:<\/strong>
    1. Verbs of senses\/perception:<\/strong> hear, notice, recognize, see, smell<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      However, there is certain deliberate use of senses, such as listen, gaze, look (at), observe (= watch), watch and stare and of course, we can use them in the progressive tense: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I am\nwatching this place carefully, but don\u2019t see anything unusual.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Rita is listening to the IELTS tape, but she has put\non the headphones so nobody else hears it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Verbs of emotions and feelings:<\/strong> admire (= respect), adore, appreciate (=\nvalue), care for, desire, detest, dislike, fear, feel, hate, hope, loathe,\nlove, mind (= care), respect, prefer, refuse, value, want, wish<\/em><\/strong> <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Some verbs can also be used in the progressive tense depending upon the context (deliberate actions). For example, admire <\/strong>means to look at with admiration, value<\/strong> means to decide the worth, appreciate means to increase in value over a period of time, enjoy and at times love\/like means to enjoy, and hate means the opposite. Yet it is safer to use the simple tense with love<\/strong>, like<\/strong> and hate<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Do\nyou like your new job? How are you liking your new job?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        I\nhate touristy places, but I am enjoying this place for some unexplained\nreasons. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        I\nlove eating burgers, but I don\u2019t know why I am not loving it today. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Verbs of appearing:<\/strong> seem, look, appear<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          It seems acceptable, so you are good to go.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          She\nlooks beautiful, but today she is looking stunningly a knockout girl. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Verbs of thinking:<\/strong> agree, appreciate (= understand), assume, believe, expect (= think),\nfeel (= think), feel sure\/certain, forget, know, mean, perceive, realize,\nrecall, recognize, recollect, remember, see (= understand) see through someone\n(= penetrated his attempt to deceive) suppose, think (= have an opinion), trust\n(= believe\/have confidence in), understand<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            I do not\nagree with you on this point. And I assume you have a long way to go yet. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            I see\nthrough his devious plan and also feel certain that he won\u2019t be successful in\nit. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            • Verbs of possession: possess, own, owe, belong<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              How\nmuch does she owe you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Do\nyou own this bungalow? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Did you know?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Some native speakers and singers do not pronounce \u2018ing\u2019 entirely, but they pronounce only \u2018in\u2019 and omit \u2018g\u2019.<\/strong> For example, \u201cQuit playin<\/strong> games with me\u201d instead of \u201cQuit playing games with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              There is also a non-standard short form for am not, is not, are not, have not<\/em> and has not<\/em>. It is ain\u2019t.<\/strong>  For example, \u201cQuit playin games with me.\u201d  <\/em><\/strong>~<\/em><\/strong> \u201cNo, I ain\u2019t.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
