\n 2nd<\/sup> Person<\/strong>\n <\/td>\n You were eating = You\u2019re\n eating\n <\/td>\n You were eating = You\u2019re\n eating\n <\/td><\/tr>
\n 3rd<\/sup> Person<\/strong>\n <\/td>\n He was eating = He\u2019s\n eating\n <\/td>\n  \n <\/td><\/tr>

Uses of The Past Progressive (Continuous) Tense:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The past progressive tense is mainly used for past\nactions which continued for some time, but we may not have an idea about their\nexact limits. In other words, it is not important to learn the fact how long it\nwent on. Look at the below-mentioned diagram:<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    • It\ncan be used without a time reference; indicates gradual development.:<\/strong> It was getting difficult.   The temperature was rising. <\/em><\/li>
    • It\ncan also be used with a time reference; denotes that an action which began\nprior to that time and probably continued then after, too. <\/strong>
      • At\nnine I was having breakfast<\/em> says indirectly that I was in the\nmiddle of breakfast at nine, i.e. that I started it before nine. <\/li><\/ul>
        • I\nhad breakfast at nine<\/em> would indicate that I started it at\nnine.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
        • With\nwhen and while time expression:<\/strong>
          • When I entered the room, my cat was whining.<\/em><\/li><\/ul><\/li>
          • It\nis used in the indirect narration; a past equivalent of the present progressive\ntense:<\/strong>
            • Direct\nspeech: She said, \u2018I am leaving this\nplace\u2019. <\/em><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
