Uses of The Past Perfect Tense:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The past\nperfect tense is used for actions completed before a certain moment in the\npast: <\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Present: My\nbrother has just left for airport. If you hurry you will catch him.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Past: When\nhe arrived, my brother had just left for airport. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I met her father in Canada last year. I had seen him the last ten years before.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • When two\nactions happen in the past, it may be necessary to describe which action\nhappened earlier than the other. <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      When he\narrived, my brother had just left for airport.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The child\nhad begun crying before her mother reached the nursery school.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • The past\nperfect tense can be used with since\/for\/always etc. for an action which began\nthe time of speaking in the past, and <\/strong>
        • was still in progression at that time or<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>
          • ended at that time or just before it.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/li>
          • He had been a police officer for ten years, and\ndecided to stay in the police department till he reached the retirement.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            We had lived in this small village for five years before\nmoving to a big city. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            • The old banyan tree, which had stood in the middle of\nthe garden for 40 years\/since before the garden was developed, suddenly crashed\nto the ground.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
